Take a sneak peek into our latest Day in the Life with Sam Heath, MEP/REVIT AutoCAD Technician.
Sam has kindly shared with us all about his day-to-day role at Watkins as well as his favourite part of the construction industry.
Q – Sam, what does your role involve at Watkins?
A – My role involves a variety of aspects, such as:
- Producing 2D drawings from either a collaborated 3D model within REVIT or from a 2D AutoCAD file.
- Coordinating a 3D model within REVIT to suit on-site installation requirements and a given brief.
- Turn conceptual designs into construction ready drawings.
My biggest priority is implementing the correct REVIT/BIM standards and practices within Watkins. This will allow Watkins to grow its BIM profile to allow us to further improve our understanding and utilisation of both BIM and REVIT, respectively.

Q – Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you entered the industry?
A – After Secondary School, I initially studied Forensic Science at college before progressing to Computer Science at University.
In 2015 I answered an ad in the paper to be a trainee AutoCAD Technician for my previous employer before progressing in my career by joining Watkins in September 2022.
Q – What is your favourite part of your role and company?
A – I love the technical side of modelling 2D elements in 3D; the logical and problem-solving nature of working within a 3D environment.
Watkins as a company has been extremely welcoming and incredibly considerate since I have joined. I have met some amazing people here who I enjoy working with. This environment allows me to think of a solution that could either be straightforward or a little outside the box.
Q – Would you recommend the construction industry to those starting to think about their careers?
A – Definitely, the construction industry provides immense job satisfaction, especially when you can see the process from start to finish. There is no better feeling than when you can drive past buildings you know you have had a hand in building.
BIM and REVIT are unlike any tool within the building industry, it allows for unprecedented levels of detail and information to be stored and manipulated to fit a given ideal or specification. If this is something you enjoy or have a passion for, go for it.
Q – And to finish it up, can you tell me a fun or interesting fact about yourself?
A – I don’t consider myself very interesting, but I suppose one fact about me is that I am a keen tennis player. I play twice a week in Herne Bay and have done since 2020. Another fact people may not believe is that I hadn’t been abroad until I was 29.
Thank you so much, Sam, for taking the time to tell us all about your role at Watkins.
